December 2007 That Reminds Me

Fantasy shopping

Remember the days when getting one or two specially chosen gifts at Christmastime was the norm?

Lately, I’ve been getting e-mails from companies advertising extravagant presents for those who have everything. When I say extravagant, I’m talking thousands, even millions of dollars.

Though — sorry, everyone — I have no intention of buying any of this stuff, it’s still fun to go fantasy Christmas shopping.

For instance, the Wyndansea Golf Resort on Vancouver Island in Canada is offering the ultimate golfer’s gift. Among the perks: multigenerational golf privileges at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club of Canada, associate membership in Jack Nicklaus Golf Clubs worldwide, VIP access to Nicklaus-hosted tournaments, an oceanfront home site and private jet service for one year. The price tag: $2.2 million.

The Nieman Marcus catalog has long recognized as THE source for its self-described “over-the-top” gifts. Particularly enticing presents were the impressive and massive Dragon Topiary (for those with a big yard and no neighborhood association covenants) for $35,000 and a “Classical Superstars” Fantasy Concert for $1.59 million. Fancy owning a Rocket Racing League franchise? All it takes is a generous loved one willing to pony up $2 million.

Luckily, there are some interesting options for the budget-minded rich folk.

Consider this one: a two-and-a-half day long CSI fantasy camp held in of all places, Ashtabula, Ohio. While pretending to be a crime scene investigator, campers can discover and evaluate clues in their own “murder” case, using their own inspection tools and faux lifelike (well, maybe that’s not a good choice of words) dead body. You can make a detective show fan’s dreams come true for $3,000.

The on-line company offering this gift, www.cloud9living.com, specializes in “experience” gifts including driving a NASCAR and flying in a Russian MiG 25 over Moscow. The Web site includes descriptions of more affordable adventures and indulgences closer to home, such as horseback riding in Brown County and spa packages in Indianapolis.

Lush gifts may come with high price tags, but lifelong memories aren’t dependent on extravagant spending.

Still, it is entertaining to see what’s available. I’m just wondering if anybody is actually buying it!
