July 2007 Along Those Lines

Electric co-op camp fuses fun with electrical safety
Indiana’s Touchstone Energy Camp left a deep impression on Lauren Daugherty, a sixth grader from Rochester.
“I learned so much that makes me understand how to be safer around electricity,” she wrote in a follow-up thank you note. “I know that I will be safer, but most importantly, I will be able to share it with others.”
That’s one reason 30 of Indiana’s electric cooperatives sponsor the camp each year: to give sixth graders a better understanding of electrical safety. Another reason is to offer them ample opportunity to get outdoors and have a lot of fun, too. “It was a blast,” noted Lauren.
The fifth annual camp, held June 6-9 at Camp Tecumseh near Brookston, included 109 campers from all over Indiana.
Activities include regular camp fare: horseback riding, water activities, marksmanship, wall climbing and wild animals. And it also included a live power line safety demonstration, a talk about electrical safety, an education on electric cooperatives and utilities, and much more.

Cooked squirrel, above left, is a Touchstone Energy camp specialty — courtesy of Kyle Finley’s Live Line Demo. The artificial animal draws an arc from the energized equipment to show campers what happens to animals — and people — that make contact with power lines and poletop transformers. Finley, a former electric lineman from Illinois, also cooked hot dogs with his display. After removing the protective gear he uses for the demo, left, he also warned campers to stay in the car if they’re ever in an accident with a utility pole to avoid being electrocuted by fallen lines. At far left, camper Adam Crabb intently watches.
