Halloween fun!
 … without spending any moola!
Having a hauntingly good time at Halloween doesn’t have to blow your — or your mom’s and dad’s — budget. You can make some really cool and funny costumes by yourself. All it takes is a little creativity and a trip to the local thrift shop, your attic or your maybe parents’ closet. Plus, we’ll give you some ideas to use if you’re hosting a Halloween party, and a recipe for an easy to make face paint.
Nerds rule! At Halloween, it’s cool to be a nerd. Wear pants that are too short (the wilder the color, the better!), button up a shirt wrong, insert a pocket protector in the shirt’s pocket and fill it with pens, slick back your hair (and tie it back in a ponytail if your hair is long), and wear an old pair of sunglasses with some tape on the nosepiece and some white socks and dark shoes. Carry a big book with you.
On tour Be the tourist everyone likes to tease! Wear some really colorful printed baggy shorts, a Hawaiian shirt or a T-shirt from one of your travel destinations, some black socks and sandals, a baseball cap … you get the idea. Hang a camera from your neck and stuff maps, travel brochures or guides out of each of your pockets.
Rock on Looking like a rock star won’t cost you a million bucks. Just wear some torn jeans and a T-shirt. Spike your hair up using hairspray. You can also use spray-on haircoloring for a dramatic look. Create some flashy jewelry with stuff like safety pins and clip-on earrings. Apply temporary tattoos to your arms. If you have a dog, borrow his collar to wear as a choker. Ask your mom if you can use her eyeliner around your eyes to finish your new look.
Paint your face Whip up some homemade face paint to help accessorize your Halloween costume. Grab a six-muffin-size muffin tin from the kitchen and assemble these ingredients: cornstarch, cold cream, food coloring and water. In each cup of the muffin tin, put 1 t. cornstarch and 1⁄2 t. each of cold cream and water. Add a drop of your food coloring of choice to each cup.
Another kind of ‘Web site’ Here’s a fun way to help turn your home into a spooky place fit for a Halloween party. Take the tape from one or two old cassette tapes that no longer work and drape them over lamps, balloons, decorations and other items in your “party room.” In just a few minutes, you’ve created fake spider webs.
