Electric bill decoder

111utilities whose residential tariff you can decode, from the OpenEI database

Pick your utility and plan, then type the kWh and the total from one bill. The decoder prices the tariff at that use, reads each line and flags what looks off. At 1,000 kWh the main plans run from $88 (Florida Keys El Coop Assn, Inc) to $439 (Arizona Public Service Co).

What the decoder checks

Every flag comes from a fixed rule, shown here, applied to the tariff record and the numbers you type. Nothing is sent from your browser.

Sources and limits

The bill model: energy by tier or by hour share (weekday 5/7, weekend 2/7), plus the fixed charge, floored at the minimum bill. The month on your bill picks the season; without it the tool averages 12 months. A tariff can change after the snapshot, so confirm on the utility site.

Questions

What do I type into the decoder?

The kWh used and the total due from one bill, and optionally the fixed charge, the delivery and supply lines and the taxes. The month on the bill sets the season.

Why is my bill higher than the tariff total?

Fuel adjustments, riders, taxes and fees are mostly outside the rate table. A gap of 5% to 20% is common, and the decoder says so; more than 20% is worth a call to the utility.

How many utilities does it cover?

111 utilities have a residential tariff effective 2023 or later that fits the bill model, out of 111 utilities counted among them; 405 plans in all.

How current are the tariffs?

The OpenEI snapshot is from 17 April 2026. Each plan shows its effective date, and the oldest here starts in 2023, so rates may have moved since.

Does the decoder store my numbers?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. The only request is the tariff file, which holds no personal data.
