      Questions

What does the county map show?

Counties of one state shaded by one of 10 measures: storm events per resident, FEMA hazard score, home energy burden, old housing, electric heating, flood claims, flood insurance and income. Select a county for its figures and a link to its page.

      What is a storm event?

A record in the NOAA Storm Events database of an outage-linked type: damaging wind, tornado, hurricane or tropical storm, ice, winter weather, heat or wildfire, 2015 to 2025. It is a weather report, not a count of power cuts.

What is the FEMA risk score?

The National Risk Index gives each county a 0 to 100 score per hazard. The map uses the highest of six hazards that cause outages and names that hazard. It rates expected loss, not outage minutes.

      What is energy burden?

The share of household income spent on home energy, from the DOE LEAD tool. Lower-income homes usually carry a higher burden than all households in the same county.

What is the colour scale option?

Whole US shades counties against national quintile breaks, so colours match across states. This state only spreads five shades across that state's own counties, which shows local differences.

Why are some counties missing a value?

Small counties or those without a record in the source file are drawn grey. The CSV leaves these cells blank.

How do I share a county view?

The address holds the state, measure and county. Copy it, or press Download PNG for a card with the map, legend and source.
