      Questions

What does the state map show?

Pick one of 34 measures and each state is shaded by where it falls among the 51 places: darker means a higher value. Click or press Enter on a state for its value, its rank and a link to its page.

      How are the shades chosen?

States are split into five equal-sized groups by rank, so each shade holds about ten states. The legend lists the value range of each group. Ranks are exact; shades are only a guide.

      Why are some states grey?

Grey means no data for that measure: for example Alaska, Hawaii and DC have no NOAA degree days in our file, and some utilities do not report outage minutes to EIA.

What does a high rank mean?

Rank 1 is the highest value, not the best. For price and outage minutes high is costly; for clean share high is cleaner. Read the unit and definition below the map.

Which data is behind the map?

One CSV with 51 rows and the columns of the table below, built from EIA retail sales, EIA-861, Census ACS, EPA eGRID, NOAA and NREL PVWatts. Download it from the link under the map.

How do I share a view?

Choose a measure and a state, then copy the link: the address stores both. Download PNG draws the map with legend and source on a card for social media.

Why does the solar payback use $3,000 per kW?

It is a round scenario price, not a quote or an average of installers. Enter your own quote in the solar calculators; the ranking only shows how much sun and local price shorten or stretch the wait.
