Questions
What does the price race show?
Each bar is a state's average home price for a year, 2015 to 2025. Press play and the bars re-sort year by year. Switch the measure to business price, industry price or minutes without power.
Are prices adjusted for inflation?
No. Prices are nominal cents per kWh as EIA reports them. A rise includes general inflation, so compare states with each other, or read the percent change as a headline rather than real growth.
How is the outage measure built?
Customer-weighted SAIDI of the utilities that report it, major event days removed. A state needs at least three reporting utilities covering 40% of its home accounts that year; 42 states qualify in 2015 and 30 in 2025.
Why do some states drop out of the outage race?
States where too few utilities report SAIDI in a year are skipped for that year, so the ranking never compares one utility's number to a whole state.
Which states lead the home price list?
In 2015 the three highest were Hawaii, Connecticut, Alaska; in 2025 they were Hawaii, California, Massachusetts. Use the slider to see every year in between.
Where is the data?
State-sector prices come from EIA-861 annual data; outage minutes from EIA-861 reliability tables. The CSV below the race has every year for every state.
How do I share a moment of the race?
Set a year, a measure and pin a state, then copy the link or press Download PNG. The address stores all three.
