Questions

How were the pairs chosen?

Neighbours that share a grid or a border and the largest states by population, plus the cheapest against the most expensive state. Others can be compared with the pick-two tool and the general compare tool.

What does a comparison page contain?

A map, a table of only the widest gaps among 31 measures with national ranks, a price chart (plus a bill or generation chart when that is where the states differ most), a bill calculator and a CSV.

Where do the numbers come from?

EIA retail sales and EIA-861 for prices and outages, EIA-923 and EPA eGRID for generation and CO2, NOAA for degree-days, Census ACS for income, NLR PVWatts for solar output. Dates are on every page.

Which pair has the biggest price gap?

California and Nevada: 32.54 and 13.15 cents per kWh.

Is the cheaper state always cheaper to live in?

No. These pages compare electricity only. Bills depend on use, climate and home size; income and other costs differ too.

Can I compare utilities instead?

Yes, the compare tool covers two utilities or two states with your monthly use.

Can I download the table?

Yes, the CSV button under the table.
