What Florida power is made of

In plain words. Natural gas is the biggest source in Florida (73%), and the power made there is about as clean as the U.S. average per kWh. Plants with 211 MW are planned to retire by 2030. New plants with 3,192 MW are under construction.

In 2025 Florida plants of 1 MW or more made 268.3 TWh. The biggest sources: natural gas 73.0%, nuclear 11.4%, utility-scale solar 9.3%. For comparison, natural gas makes 40.9% of U.S. generation. Wind, solar and hydro together: 9.4% (22.6% for the U.S.). Florida plants only; imports and rooftop solar are not counted.

The biggest annual move was 2022 at +16.8%; the latest year, 2024, came in at -7.0% against +3.0% for the U.S. Business customers paid 9.50 ¢ in 2015 and 10.99 ¢ in 2024, a gap to homes of -2.08 ¢ then and -3.15 ¢ now; industry went from 8.22 to 8.50 ¢ (+3.4%). Reliability improved at the 13 Florida utilities that report in both years: their median SAIDI went from 110 minutes in 2015 to 90 in 2024, -18%, against a U.S. median reporter of 99. Florida Power & Light Co is the largest by accounts with 5,905,174, 50.1% of the 11,779,012 accounts in Florida, and the top three hold 74.4%.
