What Texas power is made of

In plain words. Natural gas is the biggest source in Texas (48%), and the power made there is about as clean as the U.S. average per kWh. Plants with 4,831 MW are planned to retire by 2030. New plants with 23,086 MW are under construction.

In 2025 Texas plants of 1 MW or more made 601.0 TWh. The biggest sources: natural gas 48.3%, wind 21.6%, coal 11.5%. For comparison, natural gas makes 40.9% of U.S. generation. Wind, solar and hydro together: 32.8% (22.6% for the U.S.). Texas plants only; imports and rooftop solar are not counted.
